How it works

Set it up once, in a few minutes

Put your headphones on in a quiet room. After the first run Notch is just a player: tap play and get on with your evening.

broadband soundband removed around your pitch
  1. 1

    Check your range

See which pitches your phone and headphones can play back to you, in the room you are in. It takes a couple of minutes and it is not a hearing test.

  2. 2

    Match your pitch

Move through tones and stop at the one nearest the sound you hear. There is no right answer and nothing is graded. Redo it any time.

  3. 3

    Listen, gently

Notch plays sound with the band around that pitch removed. Keep the level just under your ringing, never over it, for a while each day.

Features

Built around the one number you give it

Most sleep sound apps play the same noise to everyone. Notch shapes the sound around the pitch you matched.

Notch player showing the matched pitch 6.3 kHz and the spectrum with a gap

Your pitch, cut out of the sound

Notch takes broadband sound and removes a half octave band centred on your matched pitch. Measured on the output, that band sits 17 to 27 dB down, with under 1 dB of change outside it. Hear two tones? Add a second gap for the second one.

Pitch matching, fine tune step at 6.3 kHz

Match once, keep it

Three short steps get you to a pitch: a rough range, a closer range, then fine tuning with plus and minus buttons in 1/24 octave steps. Re-matching opens on the value you saved. Nothing you measured is thrown away.

Sound list with rain and ocean layered

19 sounds, three at a time

Rain, ocean, fan, train, aeroplane cabin and more, all generated on your iPhone, so nothing loops. Bright hiss, steam and crickets cover ringing that sits high. Layer up to three, set each level, and slide the balance towards the ear that rings.

Sleep timer picker

A timer for the whole night

Pick a preset or any length from 10 minutes to 8 hours. Playback carries on with the screen off, sits on the lock screen, and comes back after a phone call if it was playing. Your mix is still there tomorrow.

Range check result with a share button

A range check you can share

See the highest tone your phone and headphones play back to you, with a card to send to friends. The result depends on your equipment, your volume and your room. It is not a hearing test.

Privacy

Nothing to sign up for, nothing sent anywhere

What it never does

No account
No sign up, no email, no password. Open the app and it works.
No network requests
Notch does not talk to a server, because there is none. It works in aeroplane mode.
No ads, no analytics
No ad SDK, no tracking, no third party code of any kind.
No permissions
No microphone, camera, location, contacts, photos or health data. It never asks.

What it does instead

Keeps everything on your iPhone
Your matched pitch, range result, sound mix and streak live in the app's own storage.
Leaves with the app
Delete Notch and everything it stored is gone. There is no copy anywhere else.
Lets Apple handle payment
The subscription goes through Apple. Your card and Apple Account details never reach the developer.
Says so on the store
The App Store privacy label reads: Data Not Collected.

Questions, problems, refunds, anything at all.

Write to me

kadir.aksoy@outlook.com.tr

Notch is made by one developer, so replies usually take a day or two. Telling me your iPhone model and iOS version helps.

Not a medical app

Notch plays sound. It is not a medical device, it does not diagnose or treat tinnitus or any other condition, and it makes no promise that your ringing will change. It is not a substitute for care from a doctor or audiologist. If your ringing is new, sudden, one sided, or comes with hearing loss, dizziness, or pain, please see a professional.

Keep the volume gentle. The sound should sit just under your ringing, never over it, and loud sound can damage hearing.

Questions people ask

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Notch has no account, no server and no analytics. It makes no network requests at all. Everything you set stays on your iPhone.

Is the range check a hearing test?

No. It checks the highest tone your phone and headphones can play back to you in your current surroundings, which depends on your equipment, your volume and the noise around you. For a real assessment, see an audiologist.

What does Notch Plus include?

Your matched frequency gap applied to the sound, a second gap for a second tone, all 19 sounds, up to three layers at once, and a sleep timer up to 8 hours. It is 29.99 USD per year with a 3 day free trial; local prices vary by country.

How do I cancel?

Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not inside the app. On your iPhone open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then Notch, then Cancel. Cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends, otherwise it renews.

I paid but Plus is not showing.

Open Settings inside Notch and tap Restore purchases. If it still does not appear, write to me with the Apple Account email you paid with.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds go through Apple, since Apple takes the payment. Use reportaproblem.apple.com with the Apple Account that made the purchase. Write to me as well and I will help.

The sound stopped after a phone call.

It should come back on its own if it was playing when the call arrived. If it does not, that is a bug and I want to hear about it.

Does it work with the screen off?

Yes, playback continues in the background and you can control it from the lock screen. If you turn on "play under other audio" in Settings, iOS gives the lock screen controls to the other app instead.

Which languages does it speak?

English and Turkish. It follows your iPhone, and you can also pick the language inside the app under Settings.

How do I delete my data?

Delete the app. Everything Notch stored goes with it, since nothing is kept anywhere else.
